Joint Commission Visit – Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso has applied for Joint Commission accreditation. Accreditation by The Joint Commission represents a health care organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards that enhance quality care and a safe environment for faculty, staff and the community it serves. Two of the commission’s surveyors will be on campus April 13 – 16 reviewing our clinical processes and policies. Our faculty and staff have worked diligently in preparing for this visit – and I am confident that their efforts will be recognized.
General Faculty Meeting – This week, TTUHSC El Paso faculty and I met for our Biannual General Faculty Meeting to discuss legislative updates, our strategic plan and transition timeline. TTUHSC El Paso leadership is continuing to work with our state legislators to gain funding to enable growth of our academic, research and patient care facilities and programs. As we continue our transition into a free-standing university within the Texas Tech University System, this growth is necessary in becoming fully accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
Spring Into Wellness – On Friday, April 10, beginning at noon, the Employee Council and Campus Health Initiative Committee will present the third annual Spring Into Wellness event. Most TTUHSC El Paso offices will close so that faculty and staff can have an afternoon to focus on their health. Working in a health care environment, we are cognizant to the dangers of inactivity, stress and poor dietary choices – but many still struggle with these issues while trying to guide patients toward a healthy lifestyle. This is an opportunity to “Walk the Talk” and enjoy a game of volleyball, basketball or flag football. Not into team sports? We’ll also have a climbing wall, obstacle course and boot camp, and plenty of vendors promoting local wellness programs and activities. I believe the best stress reliever at the event will be the Dunking Booth – where I, along with my fellow dunkees – will take the plunge to ensure our TTUHSC El Paso team has a good time and remembers that their health matters.
Mighty Mujer – This week, someone taking her health seriously is Dr. Heidi Lyn, assistant professor in the Department of OB-GYN. She is participating in this month’s Mighty Mujer Triathlon, which takes place on Saturday, April 25. Read this week’s Tech View blog to find out what drives her to be her best.
