From the Desk of the President

Texas Legislature – The 84th Texas Legislature ended this week and we are extremely fortunate to have over $75 million in tuition revenue bonds (TRBs) approved for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso. These bonds will go towards construction of Medical Science Building II. TTUHSC El Paso’s growth plan calls for over 1,400 medical, nursing and biomedical sciences students and resident physicians in the next five years, and this building will help us reach these goals. We appreciate the tireless efforts and support of the El Paso legislative delegation.
SPHN – Speaking of construction and growth, Sierra Providence Health Network (SPHN) has appointed Henry “Hank” Hernandez as chief executive officer of its new Transmountain Campus, which is scheduled to open in early 2017. Additionally, Hernandez will serve as the Sierra Providence Health Network market chief operating officer. As CEO, Hank will lead the construction of the Transmountain facility and oversee the direction, strategies and operations for this new teaching hospital, created in partnership with TTUHSC El Paso. Hank joins SPHN from Las Palmas Medical Center where he served as chief executive officer. We look forward to working with Hank in raising the level of care in the community and in helping train the medical professionals the community and region urgently need.
CIO – Earlier this week, I announced the appointment of Jerry Rodriguez as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for TTUHSC El Paso. Jerry will be responsible for establishing, developing and implementing information technology strategies aligned with our mission and goals. He will also oversee transition of these services from Lubbock to the El Paso campus, ensuring all systems and applications are efficiently transferred between our universities.
The El Paso Chamber of Commerce – Lastly, I would like to thank the El Paso Chamber of Commerce for arranging a presentation before their Healthcare Council/Education and Workforce Development Division. I hosted the group on our campus and was given the opportunity to share the wonderful work you all are doing for this institution.
