From the Desk of the President

Dr. Vivek SinghEarlier this week, I was pleased to introduce at a welcoming reception, Dr. Vivek Singh, the new chair for the Department of Psychiatry, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (PLFSOM). He came to TTUHSC El Paso from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) where he was professor of psychiatry and interim vice-chair for clinical affairs, medical director of University Hospital psychiatric services, director of the psychiatric consultation liaison service, and chairman of the Institutional Review Board. He is board certified in psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is a highly sought after national speaker on bipolar disorders.

National Recognition – I am proud to announce that we are now one of 10 adult centers in the country, and the only one in Texas, recognized as a Center of Excellence in Gastrointestinal (GI) Motility, Neurogastroenterology, and Functional Bowel Disorders, as well as a designated site to train GI Fellows considering an academic career or wanting to gain expertise in this field. All this is due to the hard work and tireless energy put forth by members of our Division of Gastroenterology, particularly Dr. Richard McCallum, a renowned expert and specialist in neurogastroenterology. The team at the Endoscopy Center — made up of University Medical Center (UMC) nurses, medical staff and assistants and TTUHSC El Paso research assistants and faculty — have transformed our GI Motility Center to its current stature. Congratulations to TTUHSC El Paso and UMC!

Department Changes – I am excited to announce a department change that will help with overall institutional messaging and branding. As of Friday, July 17, the Department of Communications and Marketing merged with the Office of Institutional Advancement. The Office of Institutional Advancement will now oversee internal and external areas for TTUHSC El Paso, including advertising and branding, alumni relations, development, grants development for corporations and foundations, graphic design, media relations, photography, public relations, videography, and web content and design.

“The Office of Institutional Advancement is excited to welcome these new members to the team. We look forward to working together to further promote the mission of TTUHSC El Paso,” said Assistant Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement Victoria Pineda, CFRE.

All inquiries regarding this transition should be submitted to Victoria Pineda via email at, or by phone at 915-215-4850.
