On January 25, 2013, the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) published the HIPAA Privacy Omnibus Rule (Rule), which included some of the most significant changes to patient privacy since HIPAA was first enacted in 2003. Some of the changes include:
1) New privacy breach notification requirements
2) Expanded individuals’ rights to receive electronic copies of their health information
3) Strengthened limitations on the use and disclosure of protected health information for marketing and fundraising purposes, and
4) Increased and tiered civil monetary penalty structure for violations of the Rule.
In response to the regulatory changes and to provide current and relevant HIPAA education, the Compliance and Security Departments have developed a HIPAA Privacy and Security training module for all faculty and staff.
This on-line training module will satisfy the annual HIPAA Privacy and Security education requirement. Notifications to HSC departments/services are being staggered over several weeks to facilitate tracking of training status. Once employees and students are notified via ttuhsc.edu email address, access the link to complete the education. Sometimes training notifications inadvertently go to junk mail, so periodic reminders will be issued to check junk mail or contact your local privacy officer if notification is not received by email.
Once notification is received, please note the training must be completed within thirty (30) days of assigned date.
