‘Brunch and Learn’ Offers Free Health Education Seminars
Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso at Transmountain is offering a free seminar series as part of the clinic’s community outreach program.
Brunch and Learn’s first seminar, held Aug. 18, featured pediatricians Sarah Zate, M.D., and Leslie Cortes, M.D. Drs. Zate and Cortes, both faculty in Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso’s Department of Pediatrics, covered childhood obesity and nutrition.
“I learned not only about obesity but also ways to have a better, healthier lifestyle by choosing different things,” said Monica Morales, mother to a picky-eating son. “I also learned that maybe it would be good to take him to a nutritionist to learn more about ways to get him to eat well and to choose certain things that can help him with his daily eating habits.”
Angie Martinez, Ph.D., M.B.A., TTP El Paso at Transmountain’s executive director, said the Brunch and Learn on childhood obesity and nutrition was timed to get parents ready for the school year.
“It’s about working with them to get on the right foot as we go into the fall,” Martinez said. “The [summer break] is hard, especially from a nutrition perspective.”
September’s Brunch and Learn will focus on diabetes.
“Diabetes is pretty prevalent in El Paso and we really want to make sure that we’re educating our diabetic population on how to manage their calorie intake and their sugars, and keep them healthy,” Martinez said. “Diabetes can then spread to other types of issues, including kidney and eye problems,” Martinez said.
