On June 5, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso Cancer Clinical Research Core established through a CPRIT (Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas) and the Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso Garbar Breast Care Center (GBCC) held a celebration in recognition of “National Cancer Survivor Day”. The event was well attended by survivors, faculty and staff. Zeina Nahleh, M.D., professor, chief of Hematology-Oncology and co-director of the GBCC, spoke about the challenges that patients with cancer face after treatment and provided resources and guidelines for survivorship care. She also she shared the results of the Breast Cancer Survivorship Program which started two years ago, funded by DSRIP (Delivery System Reform Incentive Program) and the positive impact on cancer survivors and their quality of life. Rebecca Pasillas, Ph.D., a psychologist and assistant professor for the TTUHSC El Paso Department of Psychiatry, invited a panel of survivors to share with the audience the experiences and challenges they have met while facing cancer treatment and transitioning back into their life post-treatment. The stories shared by the survivors were very inspirational and provided encouragement for anyone touched by cancer.
