Last week, dual-language sixth graders from Hacienda Heights International School visited the campus of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) to learn about careers in nursing, medicine and biomedical research.
Hacienda Heights is a feeder school for Ysleta Independent School District’s Bel Air High School Health Magnet, which focuses on creating El Paso’s next generation of health care professionals. Students are required to apply to gain admission to the high school.
“We’re hoping that this visit sparks our sixth graders’ interest in the health sciences,” said Teresa Ochoa, a counselor at Hacienda Heights Elementary School. “This way, they can start studying and preparing for the magnet school application in middle school and have a greater chance of getting into the magnet.”
