Employee Giving Campaign: Carolina Camargo De Luca

Each month, a Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso employee who contributes to the university’s Employee Giving Campaign will be featured. Participating in this campaign sends a powerful message to the community that employees not only work here, but also truly believe in our mission to serve all people through exemplary patient care, education and research. They are dedicated to excellence and committed to care.

This month’s employee is Carolina Camargo De Luca, development officer with the Office of Institutional Advancement.

The TTUHSC El Paso Employee Giving Campaign was launched in 2017 by the Office of Institutional Advancement under the direction of development officer Carolina Camargo De Luca. Funds raised by the Employee Giving Campaign are exclusively dedicated to initiatives on campus. Employees can direct their support toward an area or program they feel most passionate about.

“It’s a great way to give back to what you love and believe in most on our campus,” Camargo De Luca said. “It’s easy to sign up. You don’t have to remember to make a gift every month, as it’s through payroll deduction.”

Since its inception, the Employee Giving Campaign has raised over $100,000 in donations, with the 2020 giving year bringing in the most funds thus far. TTUHSC El Paso employees have a 10% participation rate with the campaign.  The long term goal is 100% participation.

“The EGC demonstrates that each person and every gift can make a difference. Combined gifts can make a large impact on the TTUHSC El Paso campus, which in turn positively affects the Borderland community,” Camargo De Luca said.

Growing up in São Paulo, Brazil, Camargo De Luca debated whether to play tennis professionally or attend college. Her parents impressed upon her the importance of a college degree and the opportunity to come to the United States. Her decision grew clear, and she became an international college student when she accepted an invitation to play Division I tennis at the University of Texas at El Paso.

“I didn’t grow up in the U.S., where philanthropy is taught by your family or community. I learned about its importance through scholarships awarded to me during my undergraduate studies and my current work in fundraising.”

After graduating with a Bachelors of Arts in Communications in 2013, followed by a Master of Public Administration in 2015, Camargo De Luca accepted a position with TTUHSC El Paso as a Unit Coordinator in summer 2015. She was drawn to the position because of the positive impact she could generate in her adopted community.

“Being the only health sciences center on the U.S.-Mexico border, TTUHSC El Paso is a powerful institution in the El Paso community and beyond. I know that our work – no matter which department – is making an impact on someone’s life, either as a student, patient or researcher,” Camargo De Luca said.

As the leader of TTUHSC El Paso’s annual giving program, Camargo De Luca is tasked with soliciting recurring gifts from alumni, staff and the community. This program includes the Employee Giving Campaign. Her favorite aspect of the campaign is the connection she makes with fellow employees.

“I enjoy learning about my TTUHSC El Paso colleagues’ stories and the reasoning behind their support of a specific program. It’s also a unique way for me to meet and learn about my colleagues and their affinity for the institution.”

Since the launch of the Employee Giving Campaign in February 2017, Camargo De Luca has supported the Research Excellence Fund.

“I believe research is essential for our future health. Our mission statement is to improve the lives in our community through education, patient care and research. I believe that investing in research is investing in a better future for generations to come,” she said.

To honor a record-breaking year of employee giving, and to thank Employee Giving Campaign donors, the Office of Institutional Advancement sent current donors “I Love Giving” T-shirts in August.

“The EGC ‘I Love Giving’ T-shirt is a little gesture of our appreciation for everything TTUHSC El Paso employees do for the institution and our community, and also for their investment in the future of our students, patient care and research,” Camargo De Luca said. “The shirt symbolizes that as an EGC donor, you’re proud to support the institution you work for.”

Employee Giving Campaign donors are encouraged to share their giving spirit and smile on social media.  Donors can participate by taking a selfie in their new shirt and posting to Instagram with the tag @TTUHSCEP and hashtag #TTUHSCEPProud. Photos will be shared on official TTUHSC El Paso social media pages.
