AAMC – Late last week, my colleagues and I arrived in Chicago for the Learn Serve Lead 2014: The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Annual Meeting. I was pleased by the reputation our Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine has earned. While in the Windy City, I discovered that our school has played a role in expanding the framework in which medicine is taught, impacting established and new schools in developing curriculum for the next generation of physicians. The meeting was an opportunity to interact with colleagues and exchange ideas on how to better educate our students, serve our patients and enhance research.
Dynamica Expo 2014 – TTUHSC El Paso is a bronze sponsor for the upcoming Dynamica Expo 2014 (formerly BIOMED). Beginning on Friday, Nov. 14, this two-day event is aimed at inspiring health care innovations throughout the region. To learn more about the expo or to register, go to http://dynamicaexpo.org. This is an opportunity for those involved in health care or research to connect and discuss ideas that could potentially have a global impact.
World Diabetes Day – This Friday, Nov. 14 is World Diabetes Day. It was established by the International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization (WHO) in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. In 2012, an estimated 1.5 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes, and WHO projects that diabetes will be the seventh leading cause of death by 2030. What is more alarming is that diabetes is preventable, yet the number of individuals with diabetes continues to increase. It is time to reverse this trend.
