Gastrointestinal Cancers Discussed on ‘The Exam Room’

Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso surgical oncologist Ioannis Konstantinidis, M.D., brought his expertise on gastrointestinal cancers to the latest episode of “The Exam Room,” on Tuesday, April 9.

“The Exam Room” is a Facebook Live Q&A that offers the local community an opportunity to engage with expert health care professionals from TTP El Paso.

Pancreatic cancer is one type of gastrointestinal cancer making headlines lately. “Jeopardy” game show host Alex Trebek recently announced he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and there have been many questions about why pancreatic cancer is difficult to combat.

In addition to answering questions about pancreatic cancer, Dr. Konstantinidis discussed treatment of other cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, including: liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, stomach, small bowel and appendix.

Viewers also asked Dr. Konstantinidis questions about infections of the digestive tract caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and the effect diet has on gastrointestinal health.

Dr. Konstantinidis sees patients at Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso at Transmountain and performs surgery at The Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus and University Medical Center of El Paso. He is an assistant professor in TTUHSC El Paso’s department of surgery.

Each month, The Exam Room holds one or more public Q&As, each focusing on a different health-related topic and highlighting a Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso health care specialist who has volunteered to answer questions on the subject.
