Mahesh Gajendran, M.D., M.P.H., has been named Physician of the Month at The Hospitals of Providence (THOP) Transmountain Campus. Dr. Gajendran, who joined Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso at Transmountain in September 2016, provides general internal medicine inpatient and outpatient care at the new far west teaching hospital.
On June 14, Dr. Gajendran was recognized by hospital CEO Nicholas Tejeda and the governing board of the Transmountain Campus for his clinical work and compassion for patients. Dr. Gajendran also recently trained and supervised the first-ever medical student to rotate at the Transmountain Campus. The internist and the instruction he provided left a positive impression on that first student.
When third-year medical student Robert Cullen Jones completed his training, he only had good things to say about his experience. “I wish I could have spent more time here,” Jones said.
During the Physician of the Month recognition, Tejeda said, “Being a teaching hospital affords physicians who practice at our facility the opportunity to meaningfully interact with exceedingly bright medical students on a daily basis. Dr. Gajendran has helped us in that effort by modeling the correct and compassionate way to care for patients and truly exhibits a dedication to lifelong learning. We are grateful for his hard work and the positive impact he has, and will continue to have, on our hospital.”
Dr. Gajendran earned his medical degree from Stanley Medical College in Tamil Nadu, India and later completed residency training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). After his residency, he joined the UPMC faculty and spent six years working as an academic hospitalist. He brings extensive experience in medical education, quality improvement, and clinical experience to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso.
