Sprint for Sparks – The Sprint for Sparks 5K race/walk, organized by Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine students, will take place on October 12 at 8 a.m. along Scenic Drive. The wellness event will benefit the Sparks Housing Development Corporation (Centro Comunitario Socorro Ramirez), a community center providing education, health, and cultural services for residents of the underserved Sparks community. The entry fee of $20 includes a T-shirt. I encourage students, faculty, staff and community members to participate and positively impact the lives of those living in our surrounding community. To register, go to http://tinyurl.com/SprintForSparks or follow organizers on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/sprintforsparks.
Health Care Rising – On Thursday, September 4, the Greater Chamber of Commerce and the Medical Center of Americas are hosting “Health Care Rising: Vitals and Prognosis of the Region’s Health Care Industry.” I have been asked to speak at this event, along with several of the region’s health care industry leaders. This is an opportunity for me to share our vision and plans as a health sciences center and how our growth will positively impact the quality and quantity of health care in the region…and beyond. I will also stress the importance of collaboration so that our region benefits from a wide array of services and specialists. If you are interested in attending the event, tickets are available for $30 at www.elpaso.org.
Labor Day – In case you’ve been too busy working to notice, this coming Monday, September 1, is Labor Day. The majority of TTUHSC El Paso students, faculty and staff will be on a well-deserved holiday, and our clinical offices will be closed. I want to recognize each of the TTUHSC El Paso employees who are unable to take off this holiday because they are providing vital care to our patients or overseeing our campus systems to ensure that they are at peak performance and secure. Thank you for your dedication to our university.
– TTUHSC El Paso President Richard Lange, M.D., M.B.A.
