AGE: I’m 36 and the mother of three kids ages 4, 7, and 8.
ANY WEIGHT LOSS or WELLNESS BATTLES? No weight loss battles; diabetes is very common in my family so I try to keep my weight in control so I don’t have the same issues.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AN ATHLETE? WERE YOU ALWAYS ACTIVE? I’ve never really considered myself an athlete and have never been involved in any competitive sports. I’ve exercised since I was in college, but once I started having children, I didn’t prioritize it and went several years without regular exercise. Once my youngest was about six months old, I decided I was not comfortable with myself anymore, and I signed up for a half-marathon to keep myself motivated to stay active. It all started from there. I signed up for other races after that to keep myself motivated to exercise regularly.
WHAT DOES A “MIGHTY MUJER” MEAN TO YOU? It’s a woman who sets a goal and works to accomplish it despite how difficult it may be. Even though she may receive support from friends and family, she’s the one who wakes up before the sun rises to go running or swimming, she’s the one who is sore after a long bike ride, and she’s the one who keeps at it even though it’s not always easy.
WHAT MADE YOU SIGN UP? With three small children at home, it’s very easy to find excuses not to exercise regularly. I’m too busy, the kids have so many activities, I need to spend more quality time with the family, etc. Signing up for these kinds of events gives me the motivation I need to make sure I fit exercise into my schedule. It forces me to prioritize exercise into my routine because if I don’t work out enough, there’s no way I’ll be able to finish the race.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WORK OUT? I work out to stay healthy. I don’t want my kids to have to worry about my deteriorating health if it’s something I could have prevented.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH THROUGH COMPETING? Just to have fun while staying healthy and active.
WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO TAKE ON AFTER COMPLETING THE MIGHTY MUJER? I’d like to do the Chili Pepper Challenge.
WHAT ADVICE TO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS INTERESTED IN TAKING ON THIS CHALLENGE? Just do it! Train and you’ll get through the race. The camaraderie and support from the other racers are amazing. It’s not as intimidating as one might imagine, it’s very welcoming, and it’s a lot of fun. You’ll love the feeling you get after you cross the finish line.
