A screening of the award winning documentary “Honoring a Father’s Dream: Sons of Lwala” will take place on Thursday, June 19 from noon – 1 p.m. in the Medical Education Building, room 1110. The film is part of the TTUHSC at El Paso Office of Global Health Perspectives Film Series. It depicts the true story of two brothers whose love and commitment to their father changed the future of their home village.
Lwala is located in Kenya. Kenya is home to one of the world’s harshest HIV and AIDS epidemics. An estimated 1.6 million people are living with HIV, around 1.1 million children have been orphaned by AIDS, and in 2011, nearly 62,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses. Kenya’s HIV prevalence peaked during the late 1990s and according to the latest figures, has dramatically reduced to around 6.2 percent. This decline is thought to be partially due to an increase in education and awareness.
