Running Prepares TTUHSC at El Paso Employee for Family Member Diagnosis

Maggie Rivas, an associate clinical administrator in the Department of Internal Medicine, TTUHSC El Paso, and avid runner, can’t really remember when she first started running the Komen Race for the Cure.  Initially, she ran just to run, but as she got older she came across friends or their relatives battling breast cancer.

“It became apparent to me the need for everyone to give a little in hopes of helping researchers find a cure,” said Rivas. The last couple of years Rivas and her son Ryan have run in the Komen race. “We both look forward to the event and I enjoy his company,” said Rivas. This year’s Komen race on March 2nd will be bittersweet for Rivas. Last year her sister-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer and Rivas said it has been hard for the family seeing her go through the illness.  “We have witnessed the pain and emotional challenges that affected her and have also seen the strength within her. Dr. Zeina Nahleh, an oncologist here in the Dept. of Internal Medicine, is my sister-in-law’s treating physician and has done an excellent job managing her illness,” she said.

Just recently said Rivas,  her sister-in-law completed her radiation treatment and is getting her hair back. Family members of Rivas will be joining her this year at the Komen Race.
