Dean of the Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine, Richard Black, D.D.S., M.S., and Associate Dean Wendy Woodall, D.D.S., brought an update on the dental school, as well as their expertise on oral health, to the latest edition of “The Exam Room,” on Wednesday, May 8.
“The Exam Room” is a Facebook Live Q&A that provides the local community with an opportunity to engage with expert health care professionals from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso.
As the 2021 opening of the Hunt School of Dental Medicine approaches, Dr. Black and Dr. Woodall are hard at work, not only getting the school up and running, but also educating the community on important oral health issues affecting West Texas and the Borderland.
Currently, our region faces severe oral health care disparities, including a lack of dentists and access to affordable oral health care. The Hunt School of Dental Medicine hopes to combat these disparities by educating and training future generations of dental health professionals locally. Studies show that dental school graduates are more likely to establish their practices in close proximity to their schools. This means the future looks bright for oral health in West Texas.
In addition to giving updates on the dental school’s progress, Dr. Black and Dr. Woodall answered questions related to oral health and discussed periodontal disease, teeth whitening, dental exams and healthy habits for children.
Dr. Black and Dr. Woodall also discussed the important connections between oral health and overall health, as well as recent innovations in dentistry, including advances in CAD/CAM technology.
Each month, The Exam Room holds one or more public Q&As, each focusing on a different health-related topic and highlighting a TTUHSC El Paso or Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso health care specialist who has volunteered to answer questions on the subject.
