TTUHSC El Paso Announces Passing of Dr. Edward Saltzstein

Last week, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso President Richard Lange, M.D., M.B.A., announced one of the university’s most beloved members passed away.

Edward Saltzstein, M.D., Ph.D., succumbed to illness March 9, 2016. He was 83.Dr Saltzstein-0032

Dr. Saltzstein grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was an avid camper. In his youth he spent many a summer at Camp Nebagamon, and would later return as a counselor and even as camp doctor.

He attended Yale University and received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School. A surgery residency followed at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and then a fellowship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. Dr. Saltzstein was a skilled and dedicated surgeon who is also credited with performing one of the first kidney transplants in the United States.

Joining TTUHSC El Paso in 1977 Dr. Saltzstein served as Regional Chair of Surgery until 2002. In 1994, until his retirement in January 2016, he became the Medical Director for the Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso Breast Care Center; an institution which he designed to be a total care center. The breast care center currently remains the only complete care center in the region.

Dr. Saltzstein was a consummate professional, the epitome of the TTUHSC El Paso excellence. Loved by his patients and respected by his peers, he was described as a humble, generous, intelligent and kind man.

The El Paso Times posted an obituary and an accompanying condolences page where thoughts and memories of Dr. Saltzstein can be shared. One commenter thanked the late doctor for saving her life 16 years ago.

Edward Saltzstein will be greatly missed by not only the TTUHSC El Paso community, but also by the greater El Paso community where his skills and compassion touched many lives.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, March 14 at the TTUHSC El Paso Academic Education Center’s Misenhimer Auditorium, located at 4800 Alberta Avenue.
