More than 80 guests gathered at the Mesa Street Grill on Thursday, Feb. 7 at a “Friends of the Dental School” event to socialize and hear about the latest news and progress toward the future Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine.
Local dentists in attendance said they were excited for a dental school to come to West Texas.
Richard C. Black, D.D.S., M.S, the dean of the dental school, introduced Wendy Woodall, D.D.S., professor and associate dean of academic affairs for the school, and thanked the crowd for their support. TTUHSC El Paso Associate Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement Andrea Tawney spoke about the forward momentum of the project and showed off artist renderings of the school.
Established to alleviate a shortage of dentists in West Texas and improve residents’ access to dental care, Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine will be the first dental school to open in Texas in over 50 years. The first class of 40 students is expected to enroll in 2021.
