TTUHSC El Paso Students, Staff Lead Holiday Giving Efforts

All around the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) campus, signs of the holiday season can be seen. In addition to holiday lights and decorations, the subtler signs of the spirit of giving dot the campus in the form of bins to collect toys, blankets and food for those in need.

TTUHSC El Paso is leading the holiday giving effort with four donation drives. Bins have been set up throughout the campus and off-site clinics to collect toys, food and blankets for those in need.

There are four different holiday giving drives going on now at TTUHSC El Paso.

Nursing Student Union: The Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing Student Union is leading two drives: one for food that will go to the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank and one for blankets that will go to the El Paso Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

“We are trying to support the community and any needs they may have,” said Zandra Cole, a senior nursing student and member of the Nursing Student Union. “During the holiday time, food can be a major concern for some families, so we wanted to help.”

Cancer Society Club: The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine Cancer Society Club is gathering toys that will go to the El Paso Children’s Hospital. The club will host a party and deliver the toys in January, said Dana Galvan, a third-year medical student and president of the Cancer Society Club.

“We’ve seen a lot of kids in the hospital during the holiday times battling diseases and conditions, and we thought this would bring a smile to them,” Galvan said. “I feel like it helps the parents as well. The parents can be preoccupied by the situation their child is going through, and we hope this helps the families have a good time during the holidays.”

Staff Senate: For the seventh year, the TTUHSC El Paso Staff Senate is conducting its Holiday Toy and Blanket Drive. Donations will be delivered to a local women’s shelter, said René André, assistant director of outreach programs and Staff Senate president.

So join in the spirit of giving and bring some toys, blankets and cans of food to campus. Donations can be dropped off at any of the collection bins (locations listed below).
