From the Desk of the Founding Dean
TTUHSC EP Leadership Retreat – We recently held our Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso Leadership Quarterly Mini-Retreat at the MEB. Some items that were discussed by TTUHSC El Paso leadership included updates on Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and LCME accreditation, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences; Institutional Support, Operating Policies and Procedures, and our 2014 Convocation/Graduation ceremonies for the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing and the Paul L. Foster School of Nursing.
Student Run Free Clinic – Our medical students had a very low key ribbon cutting ceremony to officially dedicate and open their Student Run Free Clinic in Horizon last Tuesday. The clinic on Peyton Road will see patients from the surrounding community—a majority of which lack any health insurance. TTUHSC at El Paso faculty members along with several community physicians volunteer and oversee the students as they help take care of patients. For now the clinic will be open about twice a month. President Tedd Mitchell gave opening remarks and was on hand to help them cut the ribbon. We are proud of the efforts of the students in establishing this free clinic in an area of town that desperately needs it.
Acting Chair – Dr. Miguel Pirela-Cruz, chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery recently received military orders to be deployed to Afghanistan with his Air Force Reserve Medical Unit. During his approximately three-month deployment, Dr. Amr Abdelgawad will be acting chair for the department. In addition to his role as acting department chairman, Dr. Abdelgawad will continue providing clinical care for those patients in his academic orthopaedic practice as well actively participate on the hospital call schedules. I appreciate
your continued support for the department.
