Office of Global Health Perspective Film Series Screening: A Doctor of My Own
This month, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso Office of Global Health will screen “A Doctor of My Own”, as part of its monthly Perspectives Film Series. The documentary film will be screened on Thursday, October 16th from noon- 1 p.m. in the Medical Education Building, Room 1200.
According to the World Health Organization, Sub-Saharan Africa carries 24% of the world’s burden of diseases, but only 3% of the world’s healthcare workforce. The health care worker shortage has caused unprecedented crisis in undeserved areas of the world. The film “A Doctor of My Own” tells the story of medical students from the newly-opened University of Namibia School of Medicine and how their work as students is changing health care. Some students will trek to areas to see and train with patients who have never seen or met a doctor from their own country. The challenges are enormous as is the pressure and unexpected responsibilities. Some students will find their calling and strength when they realize through their medical education they can revolutionize health care in Africa.
