MCA Tour – Today, members of the El Paso Economic Development Department, in conjunction with Destination El Paso, toured the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso campus for a portion of a Familiarization Tour of El Paso, which included the entire Medical Center of the Americas. Individuals on the tour included those responsible for the potential expansion and relocation of operations for Fortune 500 companies and other corporations. The tour focused on introducing the attendees to El Paso and familiarizing them with all that our community has to offer.
AMA Leadership and Excellence Award –Third-year medical student – and social activist – Kanika Monga, is a recipient of the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation’s 2014 Leadership Award. While in her second year of medical school, Monga established the non-profit organization, Voice for the Deprived, in an effort to increase awareness and resources for India’s underprivileged. It’s amazing what one person can do if they set their mind to it. Read more about Monga and her award in this week’s issue of Tech View.
COE in Obesity and Diabetes – I am pleased to share that our first faculty researcher and assistant professor was recently recruited to our Center of Excellence in Diabetes and Obesity. Dr. Munmun Chattopadhyay comes to us from the University of Michigan where she was a research assistant professor in the Department of Neurology. Her research focuses on different models of peripheral neuropathies, including diabetic neuropathy, as well as the treatment of this condition by viral vector-mediated gene therapy approach. She has received funding for her basic research from the Diabetes Action Research and Education Foundation, Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center, and American Diabetes Association. Welcome!
