Enrollment Record – We just released the latest enrollment numbers for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso. Students enrolled in the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences has reached almost 500 – an increase of 17 percent over last year. This continued growth is a true testament to our curriculum, staff and faculty and facilities. I am proud to say that we are teaching the future now.
Ebola – While the nation learned of the first Ebola casualty to take place on U.S. soil, Fort Bliss soldiers prepared for deployment to Africa to aid with the Ebola outbreak. For both Texans and El Pasoans, Ebola has become a real concern, and for this reason we should each make an effort to understand the disease. Last week, a portion of my 10-minute podcast – PodMed – focused on bringing clarity to this disease. I encourage each of you to listen in order to alleviate any distress these recent world events have triggered. Click on the purple icon to the right, then select Oct. 3 podcast.
World Mental Health Day – Today, October 10, has been designated World Mental Health Day by the World Health Organization (WHO). The objective is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilize efforts in support of mental health. As the fall weather slowly creeps in, so will the holidays and the stress that revolves around them. The change in the season may bring on the winter blues. For some, what may feel like the blues is actually the beginning of depression. To learn more about this complicated, yet manageable illness or, for direct assistance from a professional, TTUHSC El Paso employees and students can contact the Department of Psychiatry at 915-215-5865.
