Millions Awarded – Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso investigators were recently awarded close to $5.5 million in grants to continue vital research. Drs. Navkiran Shokar, associate professor in the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC EP) Department of Family and Community Medicine, vice chair for research, and director for Cancer Prevention and Control in the Center of Excellence in Cancer, and Eribeth Penaranda, assistant professor in the TTUHSC EP Department of Family and Community Medicine, received grants from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute (CPRIT) totaling $3 million. Dr. Shokar was awarded for her research titled “ACCION 2: Against Colorectal Cancer in our Neighborhoods: El Paso and Hudspeth County”. Dr. Penaranda and Co-PIs Dr. Shokar and Dr. Jennifer Molokwu, assistant professor and associate director of Medical Student Education in the TTUHSC EP Department of Family and Community Medicine, received funding for the research “Tiempo de Vacurnarte! Time to Get Vaccinated!” Dr. Huanyu Dou, assistant professor in Biomedical Sciences and an investigator in the TTUHSC EP Center of Excellence (COE) in Infectious Diseases, received an RO1 grant totaling $964,000 from the National Institute of Medical Sciences/National Institute of Health awarded for her research titled “Injury Mechanisms and Systemic Immune Responses after Cerebral Ischemia. Drs. Premlata Shankar and Manjunath Swamy, both professors in Biomedical Sciences and TTUHSC EP COE in Infectious Diseases co-directors and investigators, received a $1.5 million Ro1 grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute/National Institute of Health for their research titled “Role of PD-1H induced monocyte activation in HIV pathogenesis”. New Associate Dean – I recently appointed Dr. Richard Brower to the position of associate dean for the Office of Medical Education, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. Dr. Brower has been with TTUHSC El Paso since 1996 and has led this institution in various leadership roles, including his continuing roles as chair of the Department of Medical Education and clinical associate professor of neurology. Institutional Advancement – I am pleased to introduce two new Institutional Advancement professionals to the TTUHSC El Paso family. Victoria S. Pineda, CFRE, (Certified Fund Raising Executive), has joined us as assistant vice chancellor for Institutional Advancement. Pineda served most recently as director of Development for the College of Science at UTEP, where she led a transformative development effort benefiting the students and faculty of the university. Olivia Zepeda joins us as director of Development. Zepeda also comes to us from UTEP, where she held the positions of assistant to the AVP, director of Annual Giving and Donor Relations, and director of Development for the College of Liberal Arts.
