Medical School to Welcome Newest Future Doctors

On July 2, 2014, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center-El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine will welcome 104 new first year medical students. During the 2013-2014 admissions season, more than 3300 applied, and over 560 were interviewed for the sixth entering first-year class. “Applicants now recognize us as an established and fully accredited medical school with a track record of success,”  said Manuel Schydlower, M.D., associate dean for admissions. “We are delighted with the competitiveness of the applicants and the high quality of students accepted for admission. They have great attributes, capabilities and potential to become excellent doctors,” he added. Most students in the 2014 entering class are Texas residents, including 23 from El Paso. Some of the universities represented by the new students include the University of Texas (El Paso, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Pan American, Brownsville), Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Angelo State, Houston, Baylor, Southern Methodist, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Duke, Rice, UC San Diego, University of Southern California, Tulane, Notre Dame, Brigham Young, British Columbia, US Air Force Academy, Austin College, Nebraska, Alabama and others. The Class of 2018 will matriculate on July 2, begin their medical studies on July 7, and have their White Coat ceremony at the Plaza Theatre on July 19, 2014.
