Message from the Desk of the President

Accreditation – This week, I attended the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools annual meeting in Nashville. I met with university presidents from around the nation, and returned ready to move Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso forward through a successful accreditation process. Following the conference, I sat on a panel in Austin as part of the Texas Business Leadership Council that examined health care needs in our state. I am currently at the Texas Tech System Board of Regents meeting in Lubbock, preparing for a successful new year. I look forward to returning home to El Paso!

GGHSON Graduation –The Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing (GGHSON) Pinning and Commencement Ceremony takes place this Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre. Forty-eight students from the traditional Bachelor of Nursing and Second Degree programs will participate in the ceremony. Dr. Carolina Huerta, chair and professor for the School of Nursing at the University of Texas Pan American, will be the keynote speaker and Regent Larry Anders will assist with the degree presentations. Come celebrate this momentous event with us.

Packed and Moving – As the 2014 GGHSON class graduates, the remaining classes move in to the new GGHSON building. This 34,000 square foot building, which broke ground early last year, is an amazing new home for our nursing program. It is located right across the street from the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, making interdisciplinary and interprofessional learning flow seamlessly. The official ribbon cutting won’t happen until February 2015, but don’t wait until then to tour the building.

Safe Toys and Gifts Month –American Humorist Art Buchwald’s wrote “The best things in life aren’t things.” But if you talk to most children, I daresay their opinion might differ a bit when it comes to gifts at the holidays. We’d like to offer you some tips on choosing the safest gifts for children in this week’s Tech View blog. Enjoy!
