Paul L. Foster School of Medicine Women in Medicine and Science Organization: How to Effectively Conduct Meetings

1The Career Development sub-committee of the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) organization sponsored an event on September 24 to guide participants on how to effectively conduct a meeting. The event was facilitated by Sireesha Reddy, M.D., vice-chair and professor in the Department of OB-GYN and the Career Development Committee interim chair.

Dr. Reddy started the conversation by providing the differentiation between a committee, task force, and a team. She then divided the audience into four small groups and had them engage in the Marshmallow Project. With the simple tools of masking tape, spaghetti, one yard of string, and one marshmallow, the teams were tasked with building the tallest freestanding structure.

2To continue the presentation, the Raiders Players, which was comprised of Melissa Mendez, M.D., assistant professor and residency program director in the Department of OB-GYN, who served as facilitator, Dr. Reddy, who served in the role of time keeper, Zuber Mulla, Ph.D., associate professor of OB-GYN, Tracie Groening, M.D., clinical assistant professor in the Department of OB-GYN, who served in the role of recorder, and Heidi Lyn, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of OB-GYN. The Players provided a dramatized version of what not to do in a meeting, which was followed by a presentation on the necessary components of an effective meeting. The Raiders Players then closed out the event with a demonstration of a successful meeting.
