PLFSOM Women in Medicine and Sciences Organization Leans In

DSC00233On June 26th, the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine Women in Medicine and Sciences (WIMS) organization held a book discussion group for members to share reflections on Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, by Sheryl Sandberg, COO at Facebook. The event was held at the residence of Veronica Mallet, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Ob-Gyn and interim president of the WIMS organization. WIMS selected the book to explore the pervasiveness of gender roles, challenges women face in advancing in leadership positions, and ways to manage these circumstances.

Discussion centered on differences in perception of male and female leaders, overcoming the “imposter syndrome”, the benefits of taking career risks, and being open to different career pathways other than traditional approaches. Sireesha Reddy, M.D., interim chair of the career development committee, led members in an exercise to develop “elevator speeches”, or what to say if you find yourself in the elevator for 30 seconds with the new president of TTUHSC El Paso. Dr. Reddy also DSC00217[1]introduced message mapping techniques. Small groups brainstormed on how to tailor a message for new recruits on why Paul L. Foster School of Medicine is a great place to work.

The WIMS mission is to advance the careers of women in medicine and science by promoting an environment that supports opportunities to succeed in academic medicine. Membership is open to all male and female faculty members at Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. Current officers include Dr. Mallett, interim president, Kathryn Horn, M.D., interim vice-president, Dr. Reddy, interim chair of career development committee, Irene Sarosiek, M.D., Ph.D., interim chair of the mentorship committee, and Navkiran Shokar, M.D., interim chair of the research collaborations committee.
