Students Published in Stroke and Cerebrovascular Journal
A fourth-year TTUHSC Paul L. Foster School of Medicine student and his research group were recently published in the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease. The full-length article was available online February 19, and is in-press for publication. Michael Osborn is the first author for the article “Metabolic Syndrome Associated with Ischemic Stroke Among the Mexican Hispanic Population in the El Paso/US-Mexico Border Region.” Other students who worked on the project were Benjamin Buchanan and Katherene Tajnert, both also fourth-year students.
Osborn credits his mentor and TTUHSC at El Paso associate professor and researcher Jun Zhang, Ph.D. with providing valuable assistance and support.
“Dr. Zhang has worked tirelessly to assist me in this project. He has let me learn through trial and error, but has always been supportive of me and encouraged me no matter what. This project has resulted in a poster presented at the American Heart Association International Stroke Conference in Honolulu, HI, last year and an oral presentation at the TTUHSC El Paso Research Colloquium,” said Osborn.
He said Dr. Zhang also taught him new presentation skills, research methodology, data analysis and interpretation, technical writing and leadership skills that he says will benefit him throughout his medical career and life.
“Dr. Zhang has been a terrific research mentor and is a valuable asset to the TTUHSC El Paso community,” said Osborn.
